Exercise 7: Focal Length & Exercise 8: Varying The Pose

Exercise 7: Focal Length

The purpose of this exercise was to use different focal lengths when shooting the same subject. With a zoom lens use at least three separate points within the zoom scale.

The location used was a park on a sunny day.

A Nikon D300 camera and a Nikon 18-200mm lens were used during this exercise.

I used various different focal lengths from approximately 22mm to 200mm.

Photograph 2 – 34mm

Photograph 3 – 52mm

Photograph 4 – 112mm

I believe that the longer the focal length, does improve the attractiveness of the subject. Moving location as well as using the zoom on the lens helped to achieve this result.

Exercise 8: Varying the Pose

The purpose of this exercise was to set up a portrait session and plan for your subject to adopt in turn at least three different basic positions.

The location used was a alleyway behind a shopping centre.

A Nikon D300 camera, a Nikon 18-200mm lens and a Nikon 50mm lens were used during this exercise.

Photograph 3 – Sitting

As well as planning the three basic positions, I also wanted to use the subject’s limbs. Photograph 1 has the arms stretched back, photograph 2 has the legs bent at the knees and the hands holding each other and the last photograph has the head leaning on the arm.

This produced three very different poses in the one location; my personal preference is photograph 2, with the subject looking away from the lens.
