Exercise 9: Developing
your confidence
The purpose of this exercise was to choose an outdoor
situation where there
will be lots of people and activity. Review the
photographs and recall the comfort
level you felt at the time.
I visited Cambridge City Centre for the day.
A Nikon D700 camera, a Nikon 24-70mm lens and a Nikon 50mm
lens were used
during this exercise.
Photograph 1
I had spoken with the subject and asked her to just stay as
she was. There was no
issue with taking her photograph and I felt comfortable
with asking permission.
Photograph 2
This photograph was taken from some distance with a
telephoto lens. Using the
equipment within a busy city centre gave me no
problems.
Photograph 3
I took this photograph whilst waiting at a pedestrian
crossing. The subject had
just looked up to check the traffic, and then went
back to using the phone.
Photograph 4
These girls could see I was about to take their photograph,
they smiled after it
was taken.
Photograph 5
Again, this girl was happy with having her picture taken and
we talked afterwards.
At no time during this exercise did I have any issues with
taking photographs
within this setting, either with a telephoto lens or by
asking the subject if it’s
ok to take their photograph.

Exercise 10: Capturing
the moment
This exercise required you to find a ‘comfortable’ situation
and concentrate on finding the ‘best’ moment to capture the photograph.
A local car repair centre was used during this exercise.
A Nikon D800 camera, a Nikon 24-70mm lens and a Nikon 105mm
lens were used during this exercise.
Photograph 1
This photograph was taken whilst the mechanic was working on
one of the many machines in the workshop. I wanted to capture the concentration
and the sparks flying off the lathe.
Photograph 2
I took this photograph because I wanted to capture the
concentration of the mechanic, whilst carrying out a car service.
Photograph 3
A different mechanic carrying out an inspection and I tried
to capture the moment of concentration.
Photograph 1 is the image where I believe the main aim of
this exercise worked best. The concentration and sparks help to add some
activity to the image.
