Exercise 13: Standard
Focal Length
For this exercise you needed to select a standard focal
length, ideally between
40mm and 50mm for a full frame camera.
A Nikon D800 camera, a Nikon 24mm-70mm and Nikon 50mm lenses
were
used during this exercise.
Photograph 1
This photograph was taken outdoors at a focal length of 50mm.
The intention
was to freeze the lady and slightly blur out the background. The
low lighting
provided a challenging image, I used f 1.4.
Photograph 2
I took this photograph whilst having a walk through
Cambridge and I asked
the lady if she minded if I took her photograph. I did
not want her to stop doing
what she was doing or to pose for the camera. The
focal length was 50mm
using a Nikon 50mm lens.
Photograph 3
These two ladies were walking between shopping centres
during the afternoon
in Cambridge. They did not know I was taking this
photograph of them talking.
It was taken with a Nikon 24mm-70mm lens at 56mm
focal length.

Exercise 14: An
Organised Event
For this exercise you needed to research and prepare in
advance and photograph at an organised event. I selected ‘The Willow’ music
festival in Peterborough.
A Nikon D800 camera, a Nikon 24mm-70mm and Nikon 70-200mm
lenses were used during this exercise.
Photograph 1
This photograph was taken outdoors at a focal length of 75mm.
I asked the two men if they would let me take their photograph. The tattoos and
happy nature of the subjects add interest.
Photograph 2
This is another photograph of people enjoying themselves at
the festival. These two girls actually asked me to take their photographs!
Photograph 3
This photograph was taken inside a music tent at 200mm, ISO
2000 and no flash. The band was playing live and I had to find a clear shot of
the singer through the crowd.
I enjoyed this exercise, music, great people to photograph
and the sun was shining! Working with the crowds and one to one with people was
the most important element of the day.
