Exercise 17: The User’s Viewpoint

This exercise was to choose two spaces designed for a particular activity that is undertaken from a specific, distinctive, position.
For each location take a photograph that attempts to capture the user’s point of view.

A Nikon D700 and a Nikon D800 camera were used with a Nikon 24mm-70mm lens and Nikon 16mm-35mm lenses during this exercise.

Photograph 1 – St John’s College Chapel, Cambridge

This image shows the users viewpoint on entry to the chapel, just as they would be walking down the central aisle of the chapel.
The image was taken at 24mm, f2.8 and with the ISO setting at 3200 on a Nikon D700. No flash was allowed in the chapel.

The angle of view was taken from entrance of the Cathedral, as the congregation would be
sitting, showing their viewpoint at the time looking down the central aisle of the Cathedral.
This image was taken at 16mm, f4 and ISO 800.

Exercise 18: How Space Changes with Light

I chose a local location close to where I live and returned on numerous occasions and took
an image each time on my iPhone 4S.

The aim was to capture the different lighting conditions and to look again the next time to
see if this altered my ideas for the correct composition.
I am still visiting this location weekly and every time the light is different, it made me realise
that a location needs to be visited more than once to really appreciate your options regarding photography.
