I read an article on ‘Leon Borensztein’ about his portraits
taken during the era of Reagan in the USA. Borensztein was born in Poland and
moved to Israel in the late 1960’s, then moving to the USA to study photography
full time at the San Francisco Arts Institute. The collection taken during this
time was in the main of ‘middle class American’s’ and was a personal project
whilst actually being paid to work by someone else within the portrait studio
environment. By showing the positive ‘middle class’ attitudes even in tough
times, it opened up Borensztein mind to the middle classes in his new country.
The images were taken in black and white and were all staged using various
backgrounds.
