I watched a program I had recorded a few weeks ago,
‘Imagine, The many lives of William Klein’. ‘William Klein’ is one of the
world’s most influential photographers and the program hoped to discover the
personality behind his remarkable creative life. Originally from New York, he lived most of
his life in Paris, moving there after the Second World War to study with a
grant from the US Army. Over a lifetime of photography, film making and
documentaries, he refused to be pigeon holed in to any specific genre. William
Klein’s first documentary was of Muhammad Ali, after a chance meeting on a
flight to Miami with Malcolm X.
One interested fact that stood out for me was that he bought
camera from Cartier- Bresson, who had a complete opposite style of street photography,
much more of a stand back style to William Klein’s ‘in your face’ style.
